Mobile Apps vs. Mobile Websites

What's the difference between a mobile app and a mobile website?

People often get these two things confused, since mobile websites can be saved as shortcuts on home screens. A lot of companies sell mobile websites as mobile apps, when they are, in fact, two different things. For starters, a mobile app is going to be installed on your smartphone or tablet device which gives it much more functionality compared to a mobile website, which is really a website you pull up in your phone's browser. A mobile app, since it's installed on your device, will have the ability to access all of the features and functions of that device including your contacts list. Since it accesses the device's GPS, it enables check ins, picture sharing, push notifications and other user focused functions.

What about cost?

The cost of a mobile website versus a mobile app is another thing to consider for any business looking to expand their online presence. Mobile websites typically have a much lower cost; a simple mobile landing page can be built for just few hundred dollars, and businesses can see immediate results for a low investment. A more sophisticated mobile website that is enabled for e-commerce, can cost upwards of 4 figures. On the other hand, the up-front cost of a mobile app can start at around a thousand dollars and can cost as much as 10 to 20 thousand dollars depending on the features a business wants the app to have.

Why should my business even focus on mobile devices at all?

Having a strong mobile internet presence for your business is important because more and more people are accessing the internet with their smartphone or tablet devices than their home or work based computers. A mobile website is designed with the function of your mobile device in mind. Websites that are built for mobile devices are built for speed and functionality, and to provide people with as much information as possible. This includes directions, coupons, push notifications and thumb friendly buttons so that with one touch, a person could call that business or place an order on the spot. If your site doesn't work properly or isn't mobile friendly; you actually run the risk of losing prospetive customers to your competitors.

Mobile applications are a great way to engage and contstantly stay in front of your customers. Whether it's a mortgage calculator or a loyalty program, an app provides an extra value to your customers that encourages them to download it and routinely visit your business or the app. The more and more they see what you have to offer, the more likely you are to generate repeat business and from that gain new customers in the process.

Ensuring you have a strong online presence is important for every business and professional to consider when crafting a marketing strategy. It isn't enough to have a simple website; you need to think mobile. The internet has gone mobile, and marketing has gone mobile. More and more people are using their phones and tablet devices to access the internet on the go. If your online presence isn't crafted with that in mind, you run a dangerous risk of losing customers.
